Doctor Strange 63 | Song of the Blood Opal
Factiod: This book is the first appearance of the Tempo, a sky scraper I designed for the book that was the hangout of Vincent Stevens.
Also this issue art wise was an experiment in trying to find some way to keep doing WFH gigs at marvel and have enough energy left over for my own work. I drew it all roughly size as rather than larger than it would appear in print as is the tradition. Came out ok, if I ever found myself doing a monthly I’d consider that an option. I’ve posted the B&W inks here along with the final lettered and colours work, so you can see what I had in mind vs. how it was published.
After trying this here and in a few other places I have continued to tailor the scale I work at to the job, and often work only about 20% larger than print. Another detail, i took a lot of care with how facing page designs worked out, think you can see the symmetry and flow here. Unfortunately, with ads in marvel books the pages didn’t all end up with the right partners in print.
As mentioned the colours are HORRID, early digital work and bad pallet. Also as with every book i did for Marvel except Muties, despite following their own specks to the T every time after the first book or two I did, they always over cropped my art.
