Salgood Sam, is Max Douglas, backwards. Sometimes also Sadax Gorky.

Salgood Sam aka Max Douglas grew up in downtown Toronto, now lives in Montreal with three cats and my wife.

I’ve always been a bit of a weirdo. In part thanks to a counter culture upbringing, in part due to a neurominority wiring of my noggin. Not all officially DX but in order of identification, Dyslexic, Aphantasic [before it had a name I knew] and probable ADHD as a kid, transient Anomia, working memory issues and time blindness are the most annoying things I deal with, and I’ve come to strongly suspect I’m AuDHD.

In part out of a need to build my life around what works for all that, I’ve been a freelance artist and storyteller for most of my life, just over three decades now, working mainly in comics, animation and illustration, with a side order of graphic design, concept art and mural painting. For a few years as well as an art teacher part time until the pandemic hit and sent me back to 2D animation design as a staffer for Sphere Animation.

Pen name is derived from the reverse spelling of my given name with a couple letters changed, pronounced SAHL-GUUD Sam, it was adopted for a few reasons but mostly because it’s fun, and I was named after Maxim Gorky in the first place – the pen name of Alexei Maximovich Peshkov – so there seemed a nice symmetry to adopt one [or two] myself.

Stories rendered in Ink wash and line are my primary modes of expression, but also use a lot of pixels too. And I dabble in AV, digital photography and other things as well. Favourite themes are urban life, science & nature, theatre & dance, fantasy & sci fi, social issues & psychology, technology & engineering. And things I’ve not thought of doing before.

Past notable clients include IDW, Marvel Entertainment, DC Comics, Scholastic, The Criterion Collection, Bravo TV, Nokia, ABB Robotics, Nelvana Studios, and Sphere Animation. Future clients may include you!
